Evening at the Bowl...

Saturday night for me was one of those times when you're actually glad to live in LA. My wife-to-be and I went on our annual trip to the Hollywood Bowl where we were fortunate enough to listen to the amazing song stylings of Tony Bennett. Mr. Bennett may be getting up there in age but his lungs can still pack a wallop! Of course my fiancee and I weren't around when his music was popular, but then again neither was he. Tony sang the standards by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald but he did so during the 50's and 60's when Rock and Roll was king. Despite bucking the trends in modern music he was able to sustain a very successful career for decades. I only wish that these caricatures could do Mr. Bennett the justice that he deserves...

These are nice...I like the third one best.

I've only seen Tony Bennett once in my life, and it was a few years ago during a trip to New York.
I was on my way to the bathroom in a crowded restaurant, and I spotted him at a table full of business associates...EATING A SANDWICH. The visual of someone that legendary and recognizable doing something so completely ordinary haunts me to this day.

I have to say that I'm enjoying your caricature posts. I really like these last 2 of Mr.Bennett. They show solid construction with a sense of design, yet they still maintain a feeling of life and whimsy which too often gets lost in a more finished caricature.

These are great Fred! I don't know which one is my favorite. I think it's the second one, though. What a great expression! The mouth and teeth are really funny. Interesting how you shaded the last one, too. What did you use for that?

Thanks for the kind words all.

Katie, I just used a slightly dried up tombow brush pen over a ball point pen drawing for the shading on that one. You can usually tell if I think one of my drawings is weak by the amount of shading, it's a bad trick I learned to make a poor drawing look more pretty.

Vincent (Waller?) We should get together for lunch sometime soon, I'm working at the annex building at Nick until next Wednesday.

These are excellent! Great likeness. I think you really captured his personality in a few lines.
